Unlike most states that are governed by traditional ‘tort’ regulations, Minnesota’s car owners or leases must carry personal injury protection, uninsured and underinsured motorists’ coverage in addition to liability insurance.
Liability insurance covers claims of accidents that are deemed to be your fault.
The minimum Minnesota requirements are:
- $30,000 bodily injury per person, per accident
- $60,000 bodily injury for two or more persons, per accident
- $10,000 property damage
PIP (personal injury protection) covers medical costs and loss of income regardless of whom is found to be at fault in an accident.
The minimum requirements are:
- $40,000 per person per accident ($20,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for loss of income)
Uninsured Motorist coverage pays medical expenses after your PIP coverage has been exhausted and only if the other driver has been deemed responsible for the accident, and does not have insurance. These are the minimums:
- $25,000 per person
- $50,000 for two or more persons
Underinsured Motorist insurance helps pay for medical expenses in addition to PIP – if the other driver is found to be at fault and does not carry sufficient amounts of insurance.
- $25,000 per person
- $50,000 for two or more persons
The state of Minnesota is serious about prosecuting drunk driving offenders. The penalties increase dramatically for multiple offenders. If you are caught and convicted of DUI in the state of Minnesota, you could spend anywhere from 90 days up to a year or more in jail, you will have to pay fines ranging from $1,000 up to $14,000.
Minnesota has a number of laws in place for teen drivers. First, drivers under 18 must follow a specific set of rules under “Vanessa’s Law,” enacted in 2004 after 15-year-old Vanessa Weiss was killed at the hands of an unlicensed 15-year-old, as well as Minnesota’s Graduated Driver Licensing system.
