Auto-Owners Insurance Co was founded by Vernon Moulton in 1916 in Mount Pleasant Michigan.  Within less than a year’s time he moved its headquarters to Lansing Michigan.  The company wrote only auto insurance until 1940 and only within the state of Michigan until 1935.

They now write 26 states (listed below), coverage including auto, life, home owners and general casualty.
